Overview

We are seeking a Data Engineer to enhance and productionize an existing Business Data Platform that supports reporting and decision-making across finance, resourcing, sales, and product cost baselining.

The current platform integrates data from Jira, Tempo, Xero, and Pipedrive, with plans to include HR systems and GitLab. Data is ingested via FiveTran or API into an Azure Datawarehouse, and utilizes Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse/Warehouse) and Power BI for data transformation and reporting.

The platform was initially built by non-technical staff to prove viability. It is now functional but needs to be redesigned following best practices to ensure scalability, maintainability, and cost efficiency.

Scope and Responsibilities

The selected consultant will:

• Review and redesign the current Azure-based data warehouse to align with best practices and production standards.
• Rebuild and optimize data pipelines for reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.
• Integrate additional data sources (e.g., HR system, GitLab) using FiveTran or direct API connections.
• Refactor and document data models, transformations, and business logic to support consistent and accurate reporting.
• Ensure existing Power BI reports remain functional and optimized during platform improvements.
• Collaborate closely with the CFO to understand reporting requirements and translate business needs into data solutions.
• Implement basic data governance practices, including handling of PII and access control.
• Produce clear technical documentation and handover materials for internal teams to manage ongoing operations.

Qualifications

Technical Skills:

• Proven experience in Azure Datawarehouse and Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse/Warehouse)
• Strong background in data modeling, transformation, and normalization
• Experience with FiveTran and API-based data ingestion
• Skilled in Power BI, including DAX, semantic modeling, and performance tuning
• Ability to build and maintain data pipelines and orchestrate data workflows
• Familiarity with cost optimization in Azure or cloud-based data architectures.

Soft Skills:

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders
• Highly organized with a focus on documentation and maintainability
• Self-driven, able to work independently and manage deliverables with minimal supervision

Nice to Have:

• Experience integrating or reporting from Jira, Tempo, Xero, and Pipedrive
• Familiarity with financial or business reporting environment
